Muschamp Laundry

Many of the local women worked here.

The Sunlight Laundry in Muschamp Road employed many of the local women from the Estate. One of their main clients was St. Helier Hospital.  Mrs Clare Moore who worked there in the 1960's worked on the calender which was a large machine that folded sheets. Her daughter Clare Peters later worked in the dry cleaning department.

 

According to a Wellcome Library report from 1961 the laundry had it's own well.

When I was at Muschamp Road Primary School our "school dinners" were provided from the laundry  opposite in large thermo cans and we would eat in the 'Hall' circa 1944.

My dad David ,worked on the bank, distributing the hampers for delivery,he also was branch secretary of the nupe. union, national union of public employees

The Laundry at the end of Muschamp Road was a major work place for many of the local women. My dad was boilerman for a few years in the early 50's.  The school field was practically opposite.  Mum did afternoon shifts.  There was a large detached house next to the laundry where (to me) a well healed older couple lived (possibly the owner of the laundry). the Lady was very kind and used to allow us girls to trawl her stony front garden for 'jewels' (bits of glass, broken pottery, etc) that we'd keep as valuables in old tobacco tins.  So many memories of Muschamp Road when I was a child, now I look back and wonder what it's all like now...
